I installed SP2 from Windows Update. After installation it reboots 2 times
then gives me the text screen giving me the choice of starting normally or
in safe mode. When I select "Start Normally" it just reboots again. It then
becomes necessary to start in safe mode and do a system restore to return my
computer to working condition.

After system restoration winver gives the Windows version as "Version 5.1
(Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633:Service Pack 1)." There also is an entry under
"Add and Remove Programs" for "Windows XP Service Pack 2." In addition,
there are many entries beginning with "Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q..........."

Since my computer is custom built, I'll just throw out that it is a PIII 1.2
GHz on the 815 chipset. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

My reading of 878474 is that you must have an unusual processor, but "My
Computer" tells me that I have "Intel Pentium 4 1.70Gh".

When I restart I get no STOP error, just the "Microsoft Apologises"
screen with the 30 second delay and a different starting choices - not
sure of the exact wording because it would take a couple of hours to get
back to SP2 and then I can't see the newsgroup.

Am I right in assuming that because of the above 878474 does not apply
in this case?

Thanks.

Further to my earlier note, I've gone through the "Workaround" steps in
878474 and I don't have the Mpegport.sys driver. This is after using a
checkpoint to get back out of SP2.

Thanks.

did you try rebootin in safemode? even though you have intel chip, you might
have some hardware which needs Mpegport.sys (i not expert to comment what it
is)

Yes, I have now reinstalled SP2 (got same problem) went into safe mode
and followed the steps in 878474. There is no Mpegport driver. The only
drivers starting with "m" were mmc_2K, mnmdd and mountmgr.

Had to then remove SP2 to send this message.

To recap, the symptoms of the problem are that, on startup, the system
shows the "We apologise ..." screen with the various boot options (Safe
Mode etc) and a 30 sec countdown. Normal startup doesn't work and just
repeats the above screen.

Thanks.

No, Jeff, I have had no luck and have left SP2 off for now. Everyone who has
this problem is referred to a knowledge base article in which the cause is
certain newer AMD processors and the Intel Itanium processor. I'm running a
P3 and have the problem. I also don't have the mpegport.sys driver installed
on my computer as described. Microsoft techies: Let's get this problem
solved please!

Couldn't agree more. I've tried entering the boot menu by pressing F8
and then examining C:\WinXP\ntbtlog.txt, but I don't know enough about
booting to understand it.

If you do ever get a solution, I'd appreciate an email at

Hey gentlemen and Ladies:
I'm having the same issue, cycle reboots.
I'm running a
PIII/ 1 Ghz
512 Mbytes RAM
No CD-ROM/DVD devices attached
No Floppy

It was an AD install that I've done on 25 other IDENTICAL machines with no
issues.

Any clues here would be helpful. As it is I'll need to back up ithe user
data and re image the drive.

How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer if
the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed
successfully:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875355

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:

When you are ready for SP-2, follow the Service Pack Installation
Checklist:
