SP2 and WiFi problem

Hello,

since I have installed XP SP2, I have the following problem with my WiFi
network (Trendware TEW-403 PCI card) :

- After I have booted, the "connected" wireless icon appears in the task bar
and no error is reported. However, opening "WiFi status" shows 0 packets
received and 0 packets sent and the wireless network, including the Siemens
Gigaset 505 Acces Point, is unreachable.
- If I then click on "Repair", the connection is restarted and everything
works fine.

I have tried both with and without the MS Firewall, both with the card
manufacturer provided WLAN service and the MS Wireless zero config service,
both with and without WEP, both with static and with DHCP assigned adresses
(in the latter case, the adresses are not assigned), always with the same
result. I tried unstalling and reinstaling the card, with no change. I have
another PC with a different configuration, but with the same WiFi card and
driver and it does not have this problem after installing SP2.

Any idea how to solve this (short of uninstalling SP2) ? Could it be some
sort of race condition during the boot process where a required service has
not started quickly enough for the WLAN to use it, but that is available a
later point of time when I click on "Repair" ?

Thanks in advance.

Marder,

if your router uses UPnP (Universal Plug-n-Play), a possible
cause is that UPnP no longer works. To rectify this, activate
the UPnP exception in the firewall.

Please report back.

Hello Hans-Georg,

thanks for the answer.

UPnP was already activated on my router. Unfortunately the problem occurs
regardless whether the (new) Windows Firewall or the Kerio Firewall is
active or not.

Marder,

in that case I would try to use a more thorough repair command
and also try to repair Winsock, which is often hijacked by
adware. Please look at the details in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm.

Having upgraded to Norton antivirus 2005 and reinstalled Kerio after the
upgrade to V. 4.1.0 failed, I have noticed that my original problem of the
WiFi needing a manual repair after a reboot to work correctly has
disapearred.

I can not say whether the problem came from NAV or Kerio, but anyway it
seems to be solved now.

Thnaks for the help.

Good to hear! Yes, some third party firewalls and some virus
checkers are known to cause such problems, particularly when the
are older than Service Pack 2.
