SP2 and Out of The Box PC

I have been observing for the past 2 weeks all the problems that people are
having during, and after installation of the new SP2 download. There are
not too many PC's that are alike, so could these problems be caused by
program to program conflicts? My question is: Would a person with a "New,
out of the box" PC that had never had any outside programs loaded into it,
have a problem installing and running the new SP2 update? We are not
hearing from the people that hasn't had problems. They all seem to be
negative.
It would be good to see a few positive comments about SP2 if there are any.

Many SP-2 issues are caused by spyware and other unknown issues
already existing on the computer.
A new computer has a better chance of having no installation issues
for that reason.
Also you have not installed quantities of software that place more
unknowns into it.

Preparation in advance can eliminate many possible issues:

Of all the Windows XP computers, no two are identical.

I have had no problem with with SP2 installed.
I do wonder though, like it or not, there are many people out there with
illegal versions of software and pirated applications as well as ill
maintained systems. At risk of being controversial, will this have anything
to do with problems some people might be experiencing too?

There are a few good experience posts around on SP2. People not having
problems are obviously less likely to post.

Since you asked :-) I've installed SP2 on both of my XP Pro computers. One a
two+ year old desktop with the original XP installation and a laptop just
over a year old also with the original install. Both went off without a
hitch.

On the desktop it even fixed a couple of things that had never worked.
Specifically The XP~UPS interface and the ability to shadow copy "files in
use" during a backup. It's been about three weeks, I've tried to use all the
programs I normally use and haven't run into any problems or
incompatibilities so far.

Both computers were clean and solid before installation. Up-to-date with
antivirus, firewall, critical updates, and malware removal/protection. I did
do complete backups prior to installation.

Sheri;
Spyware, viruses etc may wreck havoc with SP-2 installation.
That is not a problem with SP-2, it is a problem with the poorly
prepared/maintained computer.
SP-2 is not intended to install on a broken system.
All issues known or unknown need to be resolved BEFORE installing
SP-2.

Well, it is in the nature of the beast that a support group will get to
see the problems, there have been quite a number of people across the XP
news groups that have not seen a problem.

It's running neck to neck, around 50% of people have had some sort of
problem, with around 10% having a serious problem & another 10% having
trashed systems. It is really up to you. Personally, if I had a new
machine I'd add ZoneAlarm (free), AVG (free), SpyBot Search & Destroy
(free), AdAware (free) and then sit back for a couple of months to see
how things pan out.

I'm no expert but I am an experienced user, I know how to make a machine
secure and I know not to put untried software onto my machines. In the
end it's entirely up to you, here are some useful links:

I've installed SP2 from the CD on two computers--a Gateway/Celeron
desktop purchased right after XP was released, and a new Dell Inspiron
1150 laptop. No issues. I use Firefox and Thunderbird, so I can't
comment on any potential IE and OE issues.
