I have been preparing all week for a clean install of XP this weekend. The
only question I still can not find an answer to is whether or not I can get
the SP2 from windows update after I have reinstalled XP I purchased prior to
SP2, in August 2003. I recall reading somewhere that it was not available
after a certain date. I would like to confirm I can get all the neccessary
updates from microsoft's website after I have reinstalled. Thanks for your
time!

Miscrosofts preferred way to install sp2 is to turn on automatic updates.

...Why not download the full sp2 CD and one of the many slipstream programs
and simply make yourself a Windows xpsp2 C.D. so down the road life will be
much simpler and you'll save a good bit of Hdd space on the install too.

If you have a burning program like Nero installed, look up
Autostreamer - it's a very simple way of slipstreaming your original CD with
SP2.

Go here and download SP2 and burn it to a CD.

Do not connect to the internet before you have SP2 or a third party firewall
installed. Your pc will be infected within minutes of connecting to the
internet. My preferred method is to slipstream SP2 into a install CD using
your original Windows install CD and the download above. The following links
have instructions on how to slipstream SP2 into an install CD.

I use nLite a program which allows you to slipstream and also customize a
windows install CD.

Failing doing any of the above your next best option is to install windows
while not connected to the internet, then immediately install SP2, then
connect to the internet. This works fine, it just takes a bit longer. Making
the slipstreamed CD will facilitate future installs or repairs.

Stevo,
"I recall reading somewhere that it was not available after a certain

That was a misnomer that you wouldn't be able to block SP2 after a
certain date. SP2 is available, just go to Windows Update to check,
don't install.
Best,

Thanks to all who have helped. I will investigate the slipstream CD and then
commence my clean install. Once again this forum has been very helpful and I
am most appreciative of your time.
