I wonder if Microsoft is proud of this??????

PROBLEM:-
I purchased Sony PCG-FR315S bundled with XP Home edition. Only software that
come with it is the Sony / Microsoft recovery disc. No XP disc.

Since installing SP2 I am having problems with installing new programs from
CD.
The error message is "16 bit Windows Subsystem".
Microsoft deal with this issue in article 324767... or so they say...

BUT, only one problem,,,, if you own a machine with XP SP2 OS you need the
XP CD to solve the problem as described in article 324767 !!

Microsoft informs me (case no SRQ 0412 17602442) that there is nothing they
can do for me.
I have to purchase the XP CD (£160) if I want to use my new software on XP
SP2. Oh, incidentally, if one unload SP2 to get round the problem then one is
unable to recieve live updates..

Fantastic Microsoft! oustanding after sales service...

Don't blame Microsoft because you chose to buy a computer that
didn't come with an XP installation CD.

It was your choice to buy the system from a vendor who didn't supply an
XP installation CD. You could have got one that did. It's your
responsibility.

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program

Also can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and
creating registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.
