Installing SP1a, on a friends PC - was going much too fast when I shot past
the option, ""Backup files if I want to later uninstall SP1a"" His is just
an 8.4gb hd - ATA66 so it's not too bad but, I was intending to conserve as
much hd space as possible.

So, does anyone know where they live and what the correct procedure for
deleting them is, or are they just lurking in a folder somewhere?

regards, Richard

Google Groups is a wonderful tool:

Greetings --

Simply delete the $NTServicepackUninstall$ folder. You can then
use the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs applet to select the
option to uninstall the Service Pack. This should produce a message
saying that the necessary files are not to be found, and asking if
you'd like to remove the option from the menu.

If you want to do your friend more favors, I'd recommend:

1) Prepare a copy of the XP installation CD with SP1 "slipstreamed" onto it.
This will simplify matters should s/he wish to do a repair installation
later. This requires an XP CD, a CD burner, Easy CD Creator or Nero, and the
ability to follow the recipes at:

(I succeeded at it, and I'm completely clueless about such matters.)

2) Have him (or her) spend a modest sum on a larger drive. 8.4 GB isn't
impossibly tiny for XP, but it could be better.
