Q4 2007 so in Microsoft terms when you calculate for the 'iminent' delay we
are looking at March next year probably!

Any guesses as to when SP1 will be released?

Probably when it is ready. I would be surprised it it was released
before September or October of this year.

When Microsoft posts on its web site as to its anticipated availability.

Yeah, that's what I heard about Vista :)
This will be the first SP where I read the entire bug list so I can get an
idea of which ones MS gets around to fixing (and I really hope this one
isn't focused on security...stability and consistency have been neglected
for too long)

SP1 for Vista will not likely be similar as SP1 for XP.

Microsoft has said that they are going to be pushing out fixes and updates
via Windows Update to a much larger extent than they do in Windows XP.

You may well get the equivalent of SP1 in drips and drabs over the course of
6-12 months.

I don't see the massive service packs that were the norm with Windows XP,
under Vista.

Then again, something major may materialize that will change this scenario.

That would means on new installs, I would have something 105 critical
updates. Weeeeee !

I thought that this statement was hilarious.

A senior Microsoft official said the company doesn't plan to issue a
major service pack for Windows Vista because the operating system is
"high quality right out of the gate."

He must never read the newsgroups.

Oh that's just scary. So people who get Vista a year from now will have 100
updates to apply ? No more creating Slipstreamed installs to ease that
problem. It will be interesting to see how this new approach works, though I
guess if they really are looking at rolling out new OSes every 2-21/2 years,
maybe that new OS will be the Service pack.

But was that with SP2 already installed ?

I guess 43 updates for just plan old XP isn't bad, but if you put on SP1,
there would be probably another 50 and Sp2 was around that number. With no
SP at all, wouldn't that mean possibly 150ish updates ?

Yep. Fresh install of XP-SP2 = 43-46 immediate updates.
