Install SP2 instead.
given the choice, SP1 wins everytime. Faster and smaller, and
with barely any less real "security".

False. I find that all three of my computers run smoother, faster and
more secure with SP2 over SP1. Now, if you don't know how to prepare
your computer for SP2, that's another matter and one you will have to
look into.

There is no CD for SP1.

Sure as hell is - I own a retail license to XP Pro with SP1. If
you mean just the Service Pack, you would be correct. But, the
OP didn't say that, did they? They just said what is quoted
above, the usual "not enough information to answer your
question" query for help.

But you can still download SP-1, burn to CD and install it:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/def
ault.mspx But as has already been suggested, it is usually
better to go straight to SP-2 since SP-2 has advantages
over SP-1.
No, it does not. People shouldn't blindly go to SP2 for any
number of reasons, some of which are elucidated by M$ itself,
but certainly not on the word of a company shill MVP alone. You
are hardly an unbiased advisor.

Why can't you people figure out that your credibility gets
trashed everytime you make a sweeping generality like you just
did here without knowing anything at all about the OP's
situation?

The answer, of course, is to install SP2, your paranoia and ill informed
opinions notwithstanding.

You have yet to give one reason.

Fact: everyone that has XP should install SP2 and you advising to the
contrary destroys any credibility you may have had.

You have yet to give one reason.

1. requires more memory
2. requires more cpu
3. requires more hd
4. requires more video
5. requires update of many apps/utilities
6. measurably slower performance based on cpu, memory
writes/reads, and hd access/transfer rates
7. no quantitative improvements in sucurity
8. buggy
9. inability of m$ to fix known problems
10. m$ kb full of known problems
Fact: everyone that has XP should install SP2 and you
advising to the contrary destroys any credibility you may
have had.

Yes I have and I will continue to do so until somebody
believable comes along to change my mind. I run SP2 and have
regretted every day of it.

As to my credibility, I have none to protect as I do not
present myself as an authority on anything. Even if I had the
technical ability to be an MVP, I would not stoop to something
that low.

But, you think whatever it is that floats your boat, Alias,
and I'll thank you to allow me the same privlidges.

No, what "that is" is semantics.
What made you think I meant anything else?

I don't know what you did or did not mean, nobody ever does.
The answer, of course, is to install SP2, your paranoia and

The answer is for you to let the OP (and me) reach their own
conclusions after examining and evaluating all points-of-view
and facts. "install SP2" is simply not, not, NOT the solution
to XP problems du jour and introduces more than it fixes. If
you believe otherwise, you are either arrogant or ignorant, or
both.

False. I find my computers to be faster with SP2.
7. no quantitative improvements in sucurity

False, assuming you mean "security".

Only for those who don't know what they're doing when they install it. I
haven't had problem one with it on three computers.
9. inability of m$ to fix known problems

Like what?
10. m$ kb full of known problems

I know hundreds of people who haven't had a problem and most of them
know less about computers than you say you do.

I say "Don't listen to any of them and do what YOU want."
Your computer may never work properly but that is okay.

For gawds sake, intall SP2 and take a chance on it. What have
you got to lose? Who knows it might even work BETTER.

Clearly you did not read my post.

I never suggested "blindly go to SP2", those are entirely your own words and
ideas.
It seems obvious you read few if any of my posts on this subject since I say
no such thing.

Note the word "usually" in my post that you seem to have conveniently
missed.
The specific circumstances of the OP need to determine the need for any
installation, update or Service Pack installation.

Your apparent need to ignore key words as well as insults display your own
credibility issues.
If you were confident in your position, you would stick to the facts instead
of your feeble attempts to shoot the messenger and ignore the message.

As for "sweeping generality", you just made one and your own credibility
suffers because of it.

you're absolutely right, dave, you have no-thing to lose except
a lot of sleep!
