SP1 won't install

Using Windows Update site, I can download the critical
update for Service Pack 1, and the install process
starts. But then I get an error message that
says 'Windows XP SP1 is incompatible with this versin of
Windows'.

Checking the View Installation History shows that there
is an instance of SP1 install that has a status of 'In
Progress'.

Is there a way to clear this In Progress flag? Or what
can I do to get sp1 installed?

Try these steps:

0. Temporarily disable anti-virus software (you DO have Anti-virus software,
don't you?).
1. Start > run > cmd
2. Sfc /purgecache (You may need your Windows XP CD)
3. Sfc /scannow (You may need your Windows XP CD).
4. Restart
5. Start the install of SP1 from the following URL:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp
