SP1 takes quite a while to install

I downloaded the full update from Microsoft this morning. Though I've been
pretty good about installing hot patches and updates as they became
available, the SP1 install took nearly an hour. The process was troublefree
and completely automatic, but it involved several reboots and took quite
awhile. Be sure to allocate sufficient time to install this update.

Downloading it now...any prompts to click through after the first few, or
can you leave it be for an hour to sort itself out?

No surprise it took an hour...after all it told me it would take that
long during installation.

No troubles here as well.........installed just fine with no dirver
issues.

Nope. As I recall, there was an option to allow it to reboot automatically.
I selected that, let it run by itself and, after an hour or so, was back to
the log-in screen. One idiosyncracy: it reports on the percentage of update
performed, and divides it into three stages. It cycles through Stage 1, 2
and 3, rebooted, and then reported it was in Stage 1 again. Once it cycled
through that, and Stage 2 and 3, it rebooted to the log-on screen, and then,
after loggin on, reported that the update installed correctly.

I haven't tried very much but, so far, everything's working great.

Ok, thanks PTravel. I may even and stay and watch the action ;-)

You can leave it for the hour to download, but you will be prompted to
restart your PC to allow SP1 to install correctly. This also can take a
while depending upon how much has to be updated.

None at all - takes a long time I have to agree - far quicker if you had the
slipstream version like I used the other week for a review...shame they
don't release that on the internet for all Windows Vista owners.

Hi!

I've just installed SP1 (64-bits).

Here is my experience :

14h10 Download 121 MB : begin
14h45 Download finished : 57 KBytes/sec
14h45 Installation : begin
14h48 BSOD : asking to remove anti-virus; so, I disable Onecare anti-virus
and firewall
15h00 Windows update : install SP1. (fortunately, no need to download
again)
15h30 Installation succeeded : SP1 is running
15h31 Enable Onecare anti-virus and firewall

Bye!

I am experiencing same as you did about the Stage 1, 2, 3 business on my
other PC that I am installing SP1 on right now. It is in the Stage 1 process
now.

I ran into an interesting scenario getting to this point though. When the
update first appeared, the download was 6x mb. That installation failed. I
tried it again, did not notice the size of the download, but it failed also.
On third try, the download was 46x mb, apparently the full package, that is
the one that is installing now. Machine specs: Pent D 3.4, 2 g memory, Vista
Ultimate, Live OneCare.

Question:
I noticed in another post in this thread, poster had turned anti virus off.
After I get SP1 installed on the other machine (which is my "test bed"
machine) I plan on installing SP1 on this machine. After problems on other
machine plus other poster's comment about turning off AV, I plan on turning
off the AV, does anyone see a problem with that other than machine being
unprotected during the installation of SP1. Systme specs for this machineL
Core 2 Duo E6850, 2 g memory, Norton Internet Security 2008. Thanks in
advance for any comments

No prompts to answer.

Thanks for the supplementary comments guys. A smooth installation with no
additonal prompts to click - the informational messages were slightly
suspect though - I lost count of how many stage one, twos and threes I
passed through.

Funnily enough my installation took exactly 42 minutes too - could this be
what Douglas Adams was referring to in his solution to life the universe and
SP1 ? ;-)

One additional observation to throw into the hat is that if you install it
on a smaller partition, you need at least 4 gb of free space available - but
you can get round this by temporarily turning off System Restore.
