She:kon/Greetings

On a Vista 64 system with 8 GB RAM, I just installed SP1 and now all
8 GB shows on the System screen. I guess MS got tired of all the questions
about why the full amount wasn't showing.

Vista 64 system SP1 RC with 16GB RAM here and the display is still broken

On the System page:-
Rating:
Processor: Not Available
Memory (RAM): Not Available
System type: 64-bit Operating System

In Task Manager:-
Physical Memory (MB)
Total 16381
Cached 6453
Free 7758

If I run System Information it's even weirder:-
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) Not Available
Total Physical memory 4.00 GB
Available Physical Memory 13.1 GB
Total Virtual Memory 31.8 GB
Available Virtual Memory 28.5 GB
Page File Space 16.3 GB

That's no good. I plan to buy a 16GB pc next year. Kan you use
the full 16GB?
Are it 4GB modules buffered RAM?

You're right they did, it'll now show the installed RAM amount instead of
what is actually usable by the system.

I was quite exicited with my 4gb showing up until I happened across Task
Manager and it's still 3.5gb :(

Sam

The Task Manager will still only show what amount of the installed RAM is
useable. The system info screen was changed to show the entire amount that
is installed.

Oh yes, I can use all 16GB of the RAM and it reports as available in Task
Manager, it's just some of the other displays, System page and System Info,
that are broken.

Yes, they're 4x 4GB FB-DIMMs (and aren't they expensive! Thanks Intel)

Yes, 16GB was overkill, 8GB would be about right for Vista x64 I think

2GB is definitely not enough and 4GB is a minimum I'd say personally.

I'd better not mention the twin 4 core processors then ;-)

I was actually building myself a new server then changed my mind and kept it
as a workstation

Changed it might be but it's broken even worse than it was before for me.

Installed Physical Memory (RAM) Not Available
Total Physical memory 4.00 GB

Yes, 16GB is a lot more expensive than 8GB. OK, thanks.

What do you do that uses all of that RAM ?

There's another company in my building, and they had purchased a new PC a
few months ago, and the recommendation to them was to buy a 64 bit OS,
because their main solid modelling package would perform better with more
memory.

I've had the guy that mainly uses this PC to keep an eye on RAM usage when
he's using it, just out of my own curosity. These designs are not gigantic,
but fairly good sized, anywhere from 100 parts to 500 parts in each
assembly and he's as of yet not seem any usage over 1.5 gigs.

Sure, you can open a LOT more windows at the same time, but there's some
point where the quantity of running apps/open windows starts to make a big
dent in efficiency.

I run a few virtual machines for testing purposes.

I've also got a laptop running x64 with 2GB of RAM and it uses most of the
2GB just booting up (XP on the same laptop used about 500MB), that's why
personally I'd recommend 4GB of RAM minimum for an x64 Vista system myself

Cool. Kind of wish I'd bought a 64-bitter. Maybe next time. The 32
does everything I want, anyway.

If you bought your system in the past year or two, you probably already
have a 64-bit processor and if you have Vista Ultimate, you already have
the 64-bit version.
