Ben, I seem to be having similar experience, as I posted
in another thread. If you check your Windows Task
Manager, you may find, as I did, that IE is taking up
huge amounts of CPU. Mine is 95-98%, even after I've
exited the browser. The only way I can make it stop at
this point is to select iexplore.exe in the Processes tab
and end the process. That's not a fix, but it frees up
CPU for other things until I can find an answer to the
problem.

Also, be aware that running the Service Pack 1 install removes
all of the "Prefetch" layout data. Before SP1, your system was
defragmented by placing certain files in a contiguous location to
speed up booting and program start time. After 3-days of use,
Windows will again re-arrange these files and you will see some
performance return. Service Pack-1 overwrites approximately
2000+ system modules, so your drive is currently fragmented.
Anytime you run a Service Pack install - Defrag the drive, after
the next reboot.

You need to run Disk Defragmenter (first closing AV program & all your programs). Logout/ restart XP.
Then let your system run idle for a couple of hours perhaps ---that way XP has a good chance to rebuild the "prefetch cache".
You must have patience the first few sessions after the SP install.
