DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller,
more appropriate download is available on Windows Update.

And I guess you believe everything a soul-less corporation tells you?

The standalone version is preferable, as it cut out WU from potentially
screwing up your install.

To get from Point A to Point B, do you really want to have to go through
Point C to get Point B?

Download center is faster with getting all its 434 MB than Windows Update
with only 65 MB... really.

Quite frankly, I find this whole situation a little maddening. PC Magazine
is reporting on their front page today that Service Pack 1 is indeed
available for download through Microsoft Update.

And yet when I go to the Microsoft Update webpage, it tells me that there is
nothing available for download.

Either PC Magazine or Microsoft got something wrong. But it's tremendously
frustrating for people who are desperately waiting for Service Pack 1 to
clear up a number of hardware and/or software issues. I am one of these
end-users. We have been waiting for way too long already, only to be told
that it's immediately available, when in actuality it's not!

It makes me think of a number of very unkind words I'd like to communicate
to Microsoft...

I wouldn't mind going to Point C from Point A to Point B if naked women were
at Point C.

There are several reasons why your computer may not be ready for SP1. This
blog covers a lot of them and has a pointer to a KB article with the full
list:

http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/w...ows-vista-sp1-released-to-windows-update.aspx

The KB is here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343

This should help you to figure out what you may need to do prior to having
Windows Update ship the SP to you.

A couple of articles explain this also:

Actually, it is better to use Windows Update.

1) Windows Update will scan and offer any updated drivers that are
recommended prior to installing the SP. It is safer/better for most people
to use Windows Update.

2) The update is typically 65MB or a little bit more, whereas the full
download link is much larger (434 MB). Windows Update downloads a special
compressed format, but it builds up a FULL copy on your hard disk just
exactly like the standalone download before beginning the install process.
So in effect, the actual SP install works the same.

Windows Update.

Wow, John. I've read a couple of your posts. Thank you for the clear and
thorough responses. A voice of reason is hard to hear in this forum.

Yes, I'm sure that is the MS party line. I just ain't buying it.

LOL! With ya'll's record on delivering driver updates over WU! Please!

People are better off learning how to get driver updates from the
hardware manufacturers.

download link is much larger (434 MB).

Ok, that argument makes sense, if and only if one is on dial-up or pays
per MB downloaded. What do you think the percentage of Vista users that
have such connections? 5%, 10%?

No, it has to go through an added decompression step, that the standalone
doesn't. Yet another step, besides WU, that can go wrong when updating
to SP1.

Not really. Again, when I update my OS, I prefer not to add any useless,
unnecessary steps to the process, that only adds more potential problems
to that update process.

I'll go directly from Point A to Point B, without visiting Points C & D.
It just makes too much sense, to bypass useless, unnecessary steps.

Yeah, I've seen lots of naked women at Windows Update.

Combine all that plus the fact that Windows Genuine Advantage probably
blocked your pirated version of Vista from using WAU in the first place
- I'd probably d/l the whole nine yards from "Crackz-r-us.ru" as well.

Oh yeah! :-)

WGA only really screws up people that paid for the OS. Pirates have been
using SP1 for weeks now.

Official store bought. Works like a charm. No problems here.

So? Does that mean no paying customers have ever been screwed by MS's
WGA/PA BS?

I read and experienced that pirated software software gets hit. Not paid
software.
I paid for mine. It is working just fine. Troll, go away.

And like the dutiful MicroDrone that you are, you believe everything you
read.

MS's PA technology is so advanced that it can't even detect the
difference between a physical hardware change, and software driver
change. And that is happening to people installing SP1 right now, being
locked out of their computers over mere driver changes.
I paid for mine. It is working just fine.

Good for you. You got lucky. Since you have this lucky streak going,
maybe the time is ripe for you to test your luck at playing Russian
Roulette.
Troll, go away.

Um, make me. I dare you.
