Actually, it is better to use Windows Update.
Yes, I'm sure that is the MS party line. I just ain't buying it.
1) Windows Update will scan and offer any updated drivers that are
recommended prior to installing the SP. It is safer/better for most
people to use Windows Update.
LOL! With ya'll's record on delivering driver updates over WU! Please!
People are better off learning how to get driver updates from the
hardware manufacturers.
2) The update is typically 65MB or a little bit more, whereas the full
download link is much larger (434 MB).
Ok, that argument makes sense, if and only if one is on dial-up or pays
per MB downloaded. What do you think the percentage of Vista users that
have such connections? 5%, 10%?
Windows Update downloads a
special compressed format, but it builds up a FULL copy on your hard
disk just exactly like the standalone download before beginning the
install process. So in effect, the actual SP install works the same.
No, it has to go through an added decompression step, that the standalone
doesn't. Yet another step, besides WU, that can go wrong when updating
to SP1.

if you want to learn more about the binary delta compression utilized by
Windows Update.
Not really. Again, when I update my OS, I prefer not to add any useless,
unnecessary steps to the process, that only adds more potential problems
to that update process.
I'll go directly from Point A to Point B, without visiting Points C & D.
It just makes too much sense, to bypass useless, unnecessary steps.
