Have downloaded this patch and fix. Now cant install any
of the essential security downloads. The only thing that
has changed on the pc is the installation of the service
pack.

Has anyone else had this prob and how was it resolved.
The error message being received in
WEUpdate cannot retrieve information needed for setup
from database. Steup cannot continue.

Please help is poss as this is stopping me applying
patches and getting rid of viruses.

Thanks

There is a good possibility that RPC is dying ala MSBlaster. Check to see if msblaster.exe is running in task manager while connected to the Microsoft updates site. There should be some other messages popping up along the way also if this is the case.

I have had simular problems on fresh installs when the first thing I do after install finish boot is dial into the internet to get the updates. If the system doesn't have the RPC patch applied to block msblaster, the system is almost immediately connected to from somewhere on the net and the critical updates fails over and over until the patch is applied and blaster is removed with something like Symantecs MSBlaster removal tool. Inow carry the patch and the blaster removal tool around with me on diskette and a USB flash key when working on client sites as a rule.

May not be it at all, but always worth a look.
