Part way through installing SP 2 it quit and showed this error code
"800736CC". It told me that "A component's file does not match the
verification information present in the component's manifest." I tried
reinstalling the SP 2, with the same results.

Then when I was closing this error message, another one came up stating "SP
2 installation did not complete. Windows XP has been partially updated and
may not work properly." That's scary! What now?

I've tried to find help on the Knowledge Base and everywhere else I could
think of on the MS web site. Nothing will tell me what the problem is or how
to fix it.

Doug,

not too scary, actually, if your Windows XP still works at all.

I would first try to uninstall Service Pack 2 if that is
possible.

The next suspicion is that your SP2 file is incomplete or
damaged, so try to get a new one and install that again.

If you run into the same error message, then it is something
peculiar in your installation. Unless anybody comes up with
better information, your next step is to do a repair
installation by booting from the Windows XP installation CD,
first selecting to install Windows XP, then, after it found your
current installation and offers to do a repair installation on
it, accept that offer.

Then install SP2 once more and see whether it works better now.

If not, I have no further ideas, short of reinstalling Windows
XP from scratch.

I had this exact situation happen to me. I got arround it by downloading a
full Windows XP SP2 manually(I did not use Windows update). The name of the
file was "WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe" and it's size is approximately
272MB. Double-clicking on this will run the SP2 update in the same mannor as
Windows update does, but first it will extract a bunch of files to an
arbitrary location. I assume that the file downloaded from Windows Update
was either incomplete or corrupted. You can search on the web for Windows XP
SP2 or the aforementioned file name, download it(this takes a while) and then
run it accepting the defaults at the window prompts. Hope this helps...
