I have an HP PC that was purchased back in December of 2001. This system has
never been online and has never been updated in any way. Just received my
SP-2 CD from MS. Is there a way to determine if my PC is ready for the
upgrade without going online? I have plenty of RAM and storage. The upgrade
is so that I can run a wired network with a new PC that has SP-2 installed.
Thank you, Steve T

Although I do recommend that you install SP2, that's not a reason
for doing so. There's no problem networking computers with XP SP2
and those without it. They don't even have to be be running the
same operating system, let alone the same service pack level.

Thanks Ken, lots of info and an answer to my networking question. I was
wondering if I networked first, would my settings and network get messed up
after the upgrade to SP-2 on the second PC. Steve T

You're welcome, Steve. Glad to help.

There's never a guarantee that something can't go wrong, but
there's no reason to expect such problems. I installed SP2 on
both computers on my network here without a problem. And since
the installation wasn't simultaneous on both machines, for a
short time one was running SP2 and the other wasn't.

With an HP machine you should first consult their site for advice. SP2
certainly has an effect on their recovery methods - for which they have
fixes, and you should check if there is anything else to be aware of
