SP 2 - a disaster for me

I have been running , fairly robustly, a home network consisting of an XP
and a W98. The XP connects to the Internet over dial-up.
I ordered and fairly quickly received the SP 2 CD and installed it. It
noticed that I had an anti-virus app in place and let me leave it in place.

Well the first problem is that booting is now at molasses speed with odd
activity on the desktop, such as icons staying in default format for a long
time etc. Then often the programs would not open.

Themn I found my network was working anymore. For example, I could not
access shared drives or files from My Nwteork Places in the XP.
When I tried to Repair the network, I got the message that Windows could not
repair my network because it could not clesr the DNS Cache. The the
infuriating, useless advice that to get more information I should talk to
the person that administerrs my network. (There's justy me, I don't have an
administrator)

I have improved matters somewhat by closing my Windows Firewall (i.e. the
one erected by SP 2) but my DNS cache is still stuck. Needless to say the
'Help and Support' gives no advice on this problem in the so-called
trouble-shooting

I would really appreciate any help onm this as it is very frustrating to
have a crippled network

The slow boot is the cause of the OS trying to rectify all the service,
start items, registry entries, ini/inf files that the sp bloated, or allowed
to bloat, your system.
I'd save my data and reinstall the OS - clean.

Try turning off the firewalls for a possible network cure.

I have an XP pro wired into a wireless router that is wired to my cable
modem. I then have another computer that is connected wireless to the
router. NO sp2 installed. My file and print sharing is VERY sporadic and
unreliable when the XP firewalls are on.

Just a thought

What I was trying to say was......... boot your computer using a DOS floppy,
then use fdisk /mbr to remove the HAL from SP2. Then format the drive (fat32)
and after that reboot with the XP cd an re-install.
Good Luck

Open the TCP/IP properties of the connection, General tab, Advanced
properties, Options tab, TCP/IP filtering properties. Check that TCP/IP
filtering is enabled and change Permit Only to Permit All. You should
have a personal firewall when doing this.
