soundcard driver

Hi,
I hope someone can help me.. I jus upgraded from windows me to windows xp
pro.. and since i did, im unable to play any music at all.. I get an error
msg to say that i dont have a soundcard or i need to update my driver.
Any idea how i could find out what soundcard i have and driver i need etc? -
i really have no idea about things like this.

Start/controlpanel/system/hardware/device manager/sound & video controlers.
Right click your sound card and then select update driver.
 
Ive tried to do what you told me, but it doesnt make any difference... when i
try to use windows media player I get the following error:

"Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the
hardware is not responding.
Error ID = 0x80040256"

Ok then, no probs. Follow the procedure i gave you before. When you find
your sound device in the list right click it and select properties. In the
box that appears click the "general" tab. Look at the bottom of the box for
a "enable device " dialog, make sure it's enabled. If it is enabled go back
to the list where you can see your sound device. Right click it and select
"update driver" follow the dialog along and hopefully you'll soon be going
again.
