I have installed a fresh copy of Xp Professional and now I do not have any
sound. It says that their is no audio device but I have the speakers
attached, another message says that I might not have a sound card. Could
someone help and if I need a sound card could someone direct me how to
establish on getting one. I am new at this computer fixing thing but I learn
quick.
Thanks to everyone who will help in advance.

Go to the manufacturer's web page for the sound device, download their
latest driver, install it.

You must know what sound card you have. Look on your receipt/invoice for
the computer - ask the people you bought the system from, open it up and
look, etc.

There are applications out there that can identify what hardware you have,
but I think they all depend on a properly installed system - as I think they
pull the information from the registry. Perhaps they do not - so I will
recommend you try one..

Once you know what you have, what next? Go get the latest driver for your
hardware/OS from the manufacturer's web page. For example, let's say you
have an NVidia chipset video card or ATI video card, perhaps a Creative
Labs sound card or C-Media chipset sound card...

Thanks I found out that there is no multimedia on my computer I guess that is
no sound card, I believe with my poor knowledge that I have to buy one, but
I had sound working until I reinstalled the XP windows. Can I install the
card myself ?
Thank you for your info, I went to the Belarc advisor website and downloaded
and now I know all the information regarding my computer. Once more thanks.

If it was working before, then you should not need to buy one. Can you post
the belarc output? At least the System Model, Main circiut board, and
Multimedia section outputs?

If you right-click on My Computer, and choose "Manage", and then click on
the Device Manager node, are there any devices showing a yellow exclamation
point?

Here is the posting for Belarc results

The yellow question marks mean that the proper software drivers need to be
installed. Do you have any of the original disks that came with this
computer?

Go to http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/cs-009245.htm

Following the instructions on that page, determine the intel chipset version
your computer has.
Then, with that information , go here:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download_center.php

Pulldown 1 will be server\workstation
2 will be server\workstation mainboard
3. Will be the chipset version you found
4. Will be further options

Or you can download the chipset drivers from the intel site. Post back what
the version is...

I went to the site like you recommended, I can't determine the intel chipset
version it says not detected. I will see if I have at work the software that
came with the computer.I will let you know, now I am going to sleep I have
had enough of this computer, Thanks so much for your help, one good thing
about this is I am learning new stuff.

Thanks Tom Felts, I have sound, I do not know exactly what I did to achieve
it but I wrote it down. It seems that after I installed SP2 update I right
clicked on my computer went to manage right clicked on C-media audio device
and upgraded driver and it started to work. Thanks, I do not know if this was
the correct way to accomplish sucess and that is why I would appreciate your
opionion. Have a wonderful day.

If it works, then don't question it.
That is one way of updating a driver, if the file exists on your system.

You may want to look at device manageer again, and make sure the yellow
icons are cleaned up...
