I have lost the sound on my desktop ... it says there's no driver installed.
How do you fix this?

Install a driver!!

OK. Microsoft key - break (together) - hardware - device manager.

Scroll down to sound.

Right click on an item - install driver.

Hi

Download/install the latest XP compliant driver from the manufacturer's web
site.

open the 'run' command, type
devmgmt.msc
and run it. Go to the View menu and select 'view by type' and 'show hidden
devices'. Navigate to "sounds, video and game controls", if there is a yellow
alert icon take note to what it is , this is what you''l be dealing with.

senarios:
1. You installed an unsupported device the OS can't use so delete it.
2. You made a change to the hardware configuration which mucked it up.
If its a 3rd party driver (like Creative Sound Blaster or ATI) you may need
to reinstall the device driver. Usually disabling the faulty driver works
just fine.

If this doesn't apply to you then be more specific to
1 hardware changes
2 software installations
3 viruses recently found on your computer
4 do you get sound at all? did you enable soud schemes from control panel >
sounds and Audio devices > Sounds (tab) > sound scheme (pick one from the
drop down menu). Check speaker volume, windows volume controls and plug
connectors.

good luck.

I do not get any sound.

I've followed the instructions in the run command and do not see a yellow
alert icon.

what is the manufacturer? If you go to the program root (where the .EXE file
is ie: C:\program files\sound device/sound device.exe) right click it, go to
drivers tab and select 'update driver', allow windows to 'choose from an
online list this one time' and follow the instructions.

I've tried to do a system restore but that doesn't work either.

Lets try again.Go to:

Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager -
Sounds, Video & Game controlers (well down the page).

Expand (+ sign).

Click on the first item (Audio Codec's for me). Troubleshoot. And answer
the questions and instructions and follow the prompts.
Do the same thing for the rest of the sound items.

First step is to ID your sound card or onboard sound chip and install
the drivers.
