Sound Schemes post SP2

I've just installed SP 2 (from the free update CD, thanks very much
Microsoft!) on my Win XP Home system... and now i discover to my chagrin,
that no matter how often i attempt to change/remove/delete the startup and
shutdown sounds from the sound themes control panel, they reappear after 1
trouble-free shutdown! While my first response would be to call this a
malicious re-programming, rationale tells me there must be something i've
changed and am now overlooking.... any suggestions out there?

hrr.. guess the 'error' submitting my post wasn't an error after all.. sorry
about the triple post.
The question still stands however. ;)

Hi m30w...,

After I installed XP Pro SP2, I successfully changed my sounds as follows:
Go to 'Control Panel' and Dbl.Clk 'Sounds and Audio Devices'. In the
Properties box select the 'Sounds' tab. Under 'Program Events' scroll down
to either 'Exit Windows' or 'Start Windows'. When one of these is
highlighted, find the 'Sounds' box and scroll down to [None]. Click 'Apply'
then 'OK'.

The above effectively removes the sounds. If you want a different sound,
make a different selection.

Good Luck,
Tom

Tried that, also tried changing the scheme to "no sounds"... again, it
works.. until my 2nd restart whereby it seems to revert to the windows
default sound scheme again.
Thanks, but i think there's more going on here.
