I recently had to install a new cd drive and new hard drive . As well as reinstalling windows . Now the only system sounds i hear are when i logon or shutdown my pc. When i play audio cds they are distorted as if there is something i need to adjust . I have went through all the troubleshoting options I could find and still am no closer to
solving this. Please help.

Just some ideas. I hope one works for you.

Double-click your sound icon (the speaker icon in your tray near the time
display) and set all the volume levels down low. If that cures the
distortion then the device might be outputting an exceptionally strong
signal and you might have to keep related sound input settings kept low.

Have you performed all your Windows Updates yet? There might be a sound
driver update that is available. Before doing any driver updates make sure
you've set a System Restore point, just in case. And know that XP also (in
Device Manager, device properties) has the ability to "roll back" drivers in
case you have a problem after a driver update. Be sure to enable the
built-in XP firewall before you establish a connection to the internet.

You can also try this utility to set your sound entries in the Registry back
to default values (this does not affect drivers). You especially need this
fix if you get a speaker beep when you single-click that same speaker icon
and adjust the volume slider and the speaker beeps one time in response
(that's a leftover infection symptom).
