sound problem-need experts advice

I have tried every troubleshooter that I know of.

The problem: All of a sudden Im not getting any sound. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled my driver. One troubleshooter told me to delete 2 files out of my Windows Registry, but I dont know how to do that or if it will even work
 
By the way, I use Windows XP and have a Compaq Presario 6000T. The sound chip is a SoundMax and so is the driver.
 
Do a system restore to a point where the sound worked. Jym

Hey Jym, thank you for responding. System restore did not work. Although, when I tried to restore, it would only let me restore back to 13MAR04. The problem started around the 10th of March. I dont know how to restore to an earlier date
