sound no longer works

My girlfriend went through her computer deleting things she thought she no
longer needed. Apparently she deleted something that she did, in fact, need.
Her laptop no longer plays any sound at all, and will not display any
available audio playback drivers. How can i fix this? Does she need a new
driver or what?
