Sorting a shared spreadsheet

In Excel 2000 SR1 and Office X SR1 I could sort the data that I
highlighted (eg. B1:G17) however, when I share the spreadsheet Excel
automatically selects A1:G17 instead. Is there something I can do or
is this a limitation of shared files?
 
It sure looks like that's the way excel works to me. (still the same way in
xl2003, too.)
