When pressing START on my XPpro a listing of applications recently
used is given, but not in any alphabetical sequence.

Is it possible/How can this list be sorted ?

The list is self sorting, and it is NOT by alphabet. It is exactly what it
says, mosy recently used. If you have 20 applications that are most recently
used (I do not know what the limitis), but allow the list to show only 8 -
you will see the "last" 8, no what where they may sort alphabetically. If
you remove one of those 8 from the list, the next most previously used
application will reappear

I do not think there is a way to alphabetically organize the "recent
programs." Programs listed under the Start menu are listed according to when
and how frequently they are used. The programs that are used the most, are
listed at the top. Someone please correct me if I am wrong...

_____

Right click on the 'Start' button and select 'Properties'. Left click on
the 'Classic Start Menu' radio button, then left click on the 'Customize'
button and make selections in the 'Advanced Start menu options'. Then left
click on the 'Advanced' button and move the progams around in the Start menu
to suit yourself. The programs "above the line" are most likely under the
"all users" folder. Most of the programs you have installed are likely
under the account name you used when you installed them. You can sort
alphabetically. If you check the 'Use small icons' box you can get quite a
few programs and program folders in alphebetically. The order will not
change unless you add programs or uninstall programs.

Actually I've been dissatisfied with the invisible hand of XP changing the
order, and your post encouraged me to do someting about it. I'd figured the
choosing the 'Classic Start menu' was the first step. I like it much better
now that the programs have predictable order, an order that I can control.
Tweak UI is also helpful in experimenting with the 'Start' menu.

If you haven't done this thing before, it might be a good idea to make
backups (under sl;ightly different names in a different folder) so that it
is easy to start over with what you have now. It isn't difficult, but
backing up a 10 KBytes or so is cheap insurance.
