Sort order in file save dialog boxes messed up

When saving a photo, or any other document, all save/save as dialog boxes appear in "thumbnail" view, sorted by
"date", newest on top. I change the view to details and sort by name, but next time, thumbnail and date sorting
reappears. No matter what I have tried, including the following KB articles on this fixes the problem

This does not apply to Save As.... for the time being this is by default.
No fix has been found as of yet.
 
Sort them, and then pick a file. It throws your sort order away if you always Cancel the dialog.

If you are looking at pictures stored in your My Pictures folder, then
the Open/Save dialog will revert to the one you have set for that folder
when you open it in Explorer
