sometimes mapped drives freezes

Sometimes, when I click on a mapped network drive, I get a very slow
response before every folder shows up. Why is that?

We are on a very fast gigabit backbone network and the server is not even
used by anyone yet.
 
There can be a number of reasons. First make sure you are using the latest
service pack on the server as a lot of issues were fixed with SP4. Also try
a different operating system as the client to see if the problem persists
such as try both Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro to see if the problem
exists with both and ideally try different network cards. The links below
