Something wrong with a Windows update?

I have my computer set for Windows updates to automatically download. I
haven't had any problems, until now. For days and days an update has been
downloading at a snail's pace. Every time I reconnect to the Net it
continues where it last left off (as it should), however, the file downloads
just a percentage or two every hour of online time. It's never going to
finish downloading at this rate.

I'm sure there must be something wrong with this particular update download.
It's too huge to be legitimate, perhaps it's corrupted.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

Am I able to cancel the download process part-way through? How do I do
this?

By-the-way, I don't have broadband connection, I'm on a modem. However,
there's still something not right about how slow this particular update is
downloading.

Becks;
That is most likely SP-2.
Depending on how many of the other updates and your download speed, it
can take a long time to download.
To stop:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab
Check "Turn off Automatic Update"
Click OK

Install SP-2 this way:

Step one has a few options for getting SP-2 on CD.

Hello Jupiter

I'd like to continue using the automatic update feature. It's just this one
gigantic file I want to stop. If I do what you say in order to cancel the
current download, will Windows just try to send me the same file again when
I turn on the automatic update again?

I'm not interested in updating to SP-2, at least, not for the time being.

Disable Automatic Update as previously stated.
Download and use this tool:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2aumng.mspx
That will stop your computer from getting SP-1 for 120 days starting
16 August.

I assume you mean: "That will stop your computer from getting SP-2 for 120
days...."?
Delete this file:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Then Enable Automatic Update and you will have until mid December
until you have to install SP-2 or make some other changes.

Thank you for your help. I haven't followed your instructions yet, but I
will do.
