Wierd email activity

All of a sudden, I cannot retrieve or send email from a Vista machine. I
reimported my email account properties from an XP machine (on which it works
fine). However, it is not working on the Vista machine. It is giving me an
error that the connection failed. I use outlook express. I recently
uninstalled Norton antivirus and installed AVG antivirus. The mail was
working before this, but not after. I would appreciate any help.

Outlook Express will not install or run on Vista. Did you mean
Windows Mail?

Any uninstall of Norton antivirus should be followed up by their
debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Chances are, you installed AVG antivirus using its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to forego installing the troublesome email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found.

If you continue to have a problem, please post the complete error message.

Try and check to see if the e-mail servers of your account are "allowed
servers" in AVG. Furthermore, if there is even the smallest slice of a trojan
found on your e-mail-server (hidden in a message or something), AVG will
permanently block the connection. What you should do is follow up the advice
of Gary and then after installing AVG anew, immediately check to see if the
e-mail servers are in the "blocked connections" list.

Also, when installing AVG, check to see if it replaces the Windows Firewall
in the Security Center of Windows. If not, uninstall, clean system of
"debris" and after rebooting, re-install with "custom" option according to
Gary's guidelines. Double Firewall (Windows and AVG) on Vista will put
traffic-speed to "zero". Specifically noticeable with Winmail.

Hope this is of help to you!
