Just recently, whenever I start up Windows XP, something immediately
activates my ADSL internet connection. I've run a spy-ware check using
AdAware, but nothing suspicious is reported. I've also checked for
viruses (F-Prot), but again - nothing suspicious reported. The only
thing I've done recently on my PC is to install a new CD writer, but as
I didbn't install any software with it, it's unlikely to be the cause.

Is there any sort of "monitor" software I can install which would tell
me what process is activating the ADSL connection during Windows start-
up?

Any help/advice very much appreciated. Regards,

CRS.

Try to install a firewall like ZoneAlarm (it's free). It can monitor all
programs that tries to connect to the internet.

Install a outbound blocking firewall like Zone Alarm and it will tell you
what's trying to connect.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually already have a firewall
installed (Kerio PF) which also reported nothing suspicious, so I guess
that whatever is forcing the connection is "known and approved" as far
as the firewall is concerned.

On the positive side, when I powered up this morning - no forced
connection!! I'm hoping that the problem may have disappeared.

Thanks again.

CRS.

That's good. I'd keep an eye on it and even check in your firewall to see
what actually has permission to connect, just to be sure.
