Kev

My computers got 4 USB ports on the back and 2 on the front. For some
reason 3 of the ones on the back have stopped working. When I look in
device manager, it shows that I've got 2 USB Root Hubs, one of them must be
for the front ones and shows as having 2 ports available, the other one must
be for the back ones and shows as having only one port available. Does
anyone have any idea why 3 ports would disappear from this hub? I've been
upgrading the system recently but everything was working ok until now. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Kev,

Have you tried troubleshooting from Device Manager (System Properties - Hardware
- Device Manager)?

Hi Kev,

Thank you for posting!

If it is not a hardware issue. let us try to remove and reinstall all USB
controllers.

To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click "Start", and click "Control Panel", and then click "Performance
and Maintenance".

2. Click "System", and then click the "Hardware" tab.

3. Click the "Device Manager" button.

4. Expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

5. Right-click every device under the "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
node, and then click "Uninstall" to remove them one at a time.

6. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.

7. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure
that the issue is resolved.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've just done that but the USB ports still don't
work. Now in device manager there's a yellow explanation mark over the USB
root hub and the status is code 10, could not be started. Also I've noticed
there's another device, Microsoft tun miniport adapter #2 that has this same
status. I'm not sure what this device is and I think it's just appeared
recently - I don't think it refers to any hardware I've got installed.
Could this be related to the problem? Thanks.

Hi Kev,

Code 10 in Device Manager may be caused by hardware failure or corrupted
driver files. After searching the knowledge base articles, I found that the
hot fix below might be helpful to correct the corrupted driver files. This
hot fix is scheduled to be included in Windows XP SP 2.

Hi, I managed to fix the problem by changing a settting in my bios. I
enabled PCI bus mastering and the ports are working ok now. Thanks for all
your help. Cheers.
