I am using XP. I have USB 1.1. Can I get support for my system to use USB 2
periphals? I want to use an external drive, specifically, Maxtor One Touch
which uses USB2 connections. I have sent for SP pack 2 hoping that this will
help me in this kind of support. Thank you for your anticipated help.

You also need hardware. usb2 cards are fairly cheep.

What you might be looking for is a USB 2.0 expansion card. You need the
ports for USB 2.0, not just software support (and you don't need SP2 for
that). Also, be sure to have a USB 2.0 compliant cable (which should
probably have come with your external drive).

There is no original native support for USB 2.0 in XP--it was added in
SP1. So if the OP hasn't installed SP1, there will be no USB 2.0
capability. Of course, installing SP2 will take care of that.

The Maxtor one touch will work with USB 1.1 but at a much slower speed than
2.0 will provide as it is backward compatible with 1.1. You may see "Using
a USB 2.0 device in a USB 1.1...." if you plug in the device to a booted
computer. Just click on the X on the message and it will go away until the
next time.

If you want to upgrade your desktop computer, check to see if you have an
empty PCI slot on the motherboard (requires removing the computer case). If
there is an empty slot, you can purchase a USB 2.0 PCI card at almost any
location that sells computer products (Staples, Comp USA, Office Depot, Best
Buy, etc.) Follow the manufacturer's instructions to-the-letter when
installing the card as to when to install the software that comes with the
card and inserting the card in the computer. (If you have a laptop, there
are PCMCIA (PCCard) devices that will plug into the side of the computer but
they normally require a separate power connector and they are bulky and IMO
not worth it.)

Happy computing.

Dear Sugar:
I am in the same spot you are. So far I've been visiting Intels site a lot.
I've downloaded the Chipset ID program. This is identify the chipset on your
motherboard. Then look for an I/O chip of series 82801DB ICH4 or newer for
chip support of USB 2.0. I have then loaded the software installation utility
that Intel states is required for XP with my MB chip set family (865) to
properly configure the operating system and ready it for recognization of USB
2.0 drivers. Intel then states that this is only to ready your machine for
USB 2.0 and the DRIVERS must be obtained from Microsoft, which are supposed
to be included in Service Paks 1 on up. The story takes a turn to what I am
finding to be a dead end, USB 2.0 support in Win XP is SUPPOSED to be in
service pack 1 and later. I've ordered, recieved and have tried to load SP1A
from the CD Microsoft sent me and still no USB 2.0. I keep getting a message
that a high speed usb device is connected to a non-hi speed port. It's a Sony
PCV-RS430G desk top system and it looks like it should meet all the
requirements for usb 2.0 and it's a Sony Microvault 128MB portable memory
device that I am trying to get to run at USB 2.0 speed, quite a story I know
but I am still convinced that if I could get this right maybe you could
follow the same up grade method. I know it's a "Long and Winding Road" but if
in the end it leads you to your destiny it would be all worth it.

Obviously you did not read my response to Sugar. You are really attempting
to beat a dead horse. You are attempting to modify hardware which may not
be able to be modified. A cheap purchase of a USB 2.0 adapter for the MB
would be easier and cheaper than what you are trying to do.
