XP Pro Ser pack 2 (1.6Gig) (80 Gig Hdd) (768 eg RAM)
Some files are VERY SLOW to open ( Windows Media Files, Microsoft Word) ONLY
on my User Account ( I am the administrator) .
I can go into my wife's or my daughters user account, and access the same
files and they open perfectly.
When I RIGHT click one of these files in my account it takes along time to
open the box, sometimes the box won't open and it may take three times to
open it with a right click.
Opening folders or programs are no problem in my account though, just the
files.
Its is frustrating as I am not sure how to fix it, has anybody had a similar
problem or can anybody tell me how to fix it ???? Thanks ... Pedrod

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm

Right click causes an error and crashes Explorer.exe after installing
Windows XP SP2 - http://www.winxptutor.com/sp2/divxcrash.htm

Manage the context-menu entries for folders, drives and Namespace
objects - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/context_folders.htm

Malke

Adding to Malke:

This procedure will list all the UNC paths listed in the registry. One of
them may be pointing to a dead network location, which might be causing the
delay.

Right-click is extremely slow only when Network is enabled:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rcdelay.htm

Note: Scan the "HKCU" hive as well.

Working with the registry, would that change for all users on the computer.
The problem seems to lie in my account. It is not in other user accounts that
are accessing the same files.
Whatever the problem is, it is not affecting the folders, JUST the files,
although exe files are opening quick???????????
Any more ideas.....please?

Did you do any of the right-click troubleshooting? What were the
results? It is possible to have something installed only in one user
account.

The two hives are common for all the users:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (some exceptions)

This is specific to the currently logged on user account:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
