some emails 'disappearing' from inbox

I hesitate to even post this, it seems so unlikely...but it's really
happening. An email arrives in the inbox, and can be selected and read in
the preview pane. Click on another - and the first one disappears from the
list. Other times, it doesn't disappear - until the next time I start
Outlook, and then it's not in the list. Then, some days later, it might be
back in there again. It doesn't happen to every email, most behave
perfectly as expected, and when they have been read their status changes to
'read'. But I cannot see any pattern or common denominator with those which
show this weird behavoiur.
I haven't tried anything yet, I suppose a reinstall would be the first thing
to try, but I would be glad for any insight or suggestions.

The most likely causes are either your view isn't the "Messaegs" view or you
are sorting by a column other than "Received".
