Recently, some application now tries to access my floppy drive about every
minute. Quite strange and annoying. I scanned for viruses, but none were
found.

Does anyone know how I can determine what application is doing this? Seems
like I read about this situation a long time ago.

Sounds like a no-longer-valid shortcut pointing toward the floppy
drive, perhaps a transfer you made recently onto a floppy. With win98
I'd use Find to search shortcuts with a text search for a:\ then
delete the guilty party.

There's more than one type of shortcut in the XP Type list, so I don't
know how to handle it here most economically.

There's a useful freeware utility called Empty Temp Folders which,
among other things, identifies broken shortcuts - it found an a:\drive
shortcut for me. (Primary purpose is to delete temporary internet
files, selected cookies, history, that sort of thing.)
