After much searching on these boards I've noticed that others were having
this problem: Outlook 2007 (and Windows Mail) would not save the password
for your e-mail account. I had the problem and noticed that many others did
as well. I have found a solution that worked for me.
KB290684 didn't work but got me thinking. I also saw some solutions talking
about Application Data settings in the registry. So I browsed and browsed
and browsed... I found a folder in
C:\users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect that had the same
S-1-.... number that was mentioned in the KB article. So, being courageous
(and knowing I could get it back)I deleted the Protect folder (make sure it
goes to the recycle bin - it seems you can't move it to the desktop) and it
eventually regenerated itself and all is well with Outlook now. All
passwords are remembered.
I know this has been a frustration with many on Vista and I hope the
solution works for others. Perhaps if it does, this can be picked up by a
site like Outlook Tips and be published.
