My boss has a computor running windows 98 second
edition and she wants to try windows xp I have the windows
xp upgrade as well as the full version now i have heard
that if you want to use windows xp on a second computor a
liscence may be required or (i may sell the upgrade cd do
not need 2 copies, not sure yet) now i know that i may
have installation problems considering activation when
this is sold !!!! How can we remedy this

Windows XP changes nothing with respect to licensing, other than enforcing
what has always been the case. If you want to install Windows XP twice, you
need two licenses, as you did with Windows 2000, Windows 9x and Windows 3.1.

I'm not quite following what you mean about selling upgrade CDs. If you are
not using the upgrade license and you want to transfer ownership of it, this
should be fine. If it's previously been activated, when it's installed on a
different machine you may be required to phone up Microsoft to get an
activation code.

Also, if either of the copies of XP are OEM software, you need to be aware
that you cannot transfer this copy to another computer. OEM software is
tied to the first computer it was installed on or the machine/hardware it
was supplied with.

Hope this helps

Ok so if i gather this correctly, if i still want to keep
the upgrade cd for my self ,I can call microsft for
another product key and the upgrade will take for her
machine and i can still use this cd on my machine? The
reason i am asking is the other copy that i have is oem
(full version) and do not want to loose this incase i need
it
Thanx Robert

If you want to use the upgrade on the other machine you need to BUY another
license.
This will cost you in the same region as the first copy you purchased.
If you call you will not just be given the second license - it will need to
be purchased.
If you are US based you can buy additional licenses from

So is the cost for this the same as the price of the
upgrade cd or less for aquiring two liscences?

Actually, I think I was wrong in what I said earlier. If you have
previously used the upgrade CD, I think I'm right in saying that the upgrade
version and the version you have upgrade become one product.

Assuming that you have an OEM copy on your machine and a spare unused
upgrade version, you can transfer ownership of the upgrade version to
someone else. However, you are *transfering ownership* and therefore can't
keep the CD or reuse it in future.

In essence -- one installation of a product requires one license. You can't
pay for one copy and install it multiple times.

To clarify, when I was talking about an activation key, this is different to
a product key. Once XP has been installed, it will require activation. If
you opt to activate over the Internet, this will check with Microsoft
whether the product has already been used elsewhere. If it has, it will not
activate. If you phone up Microsoft (it will give you the number to ring
when the Internet-based activation fails) and Microsoft agrees that you are
within your license agreement to do whatever you're trying to do, they will
give you another code that will allow activation.

To me, the important thing is whether the upgrade copy you have has already
been used.
