Software to diagnose connectivity issues?

Up until about 4 days ago, I played Halo PC online nightly. Since that
time, I have been getting disconnected from the server. It usually starts
with me being warped around the level.....then me freezing.....then I am
dropped from the server.

Why post in this group? Simple. I think it is a Windows issue. But, what
I need are suggestions for software that would allow me to monitor and log
my internet connection status in real time as well as monitor which
applications are making use of the internet connection to see if there is
some misbehaving program that I need to deal with.

Your application suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!
 
If you run intel hardware,select,internet conections,then L.click the icon in
connections (intel adapter),in the file menu select,properties,then select,
the configure tab,in the intel properties window,run the tests.Being as
you've
downloaded and installed the software from intel.
 
Thanks but I'm running an AMD 64 bit 3000+ (plus 1MB RAM, 2 150GB HDDs,
swapfile set to no swap file, XP SP2 with all patches current)

I tried Ethereal, and it monitors ALL packets in and out of the PC, but it
doesn't tell me which process or file is responsible for each packet.

The strange thing is the intermittent behavior.

I have even changed Linksys routers, and it still happens.

I called Bellsouth DSL support, but I get hooked up with some script-reading
person in a non-English-speaking country. Not that I have anything against
people in other countries....but, if you've ever tried to get through a
problem one of these script kiddies - you know what I mean.

They will blame anything but themselves. IMHO, they only ask questions to
get things to fire back at you that THOSE things are the problem and not
Bellsouth's DSL network.

Bellsouth's DSL has been FANTASTIC! It actually has worked better than I
ever expected.....until about 4 days ago. Now I am in Bellsouth DSL "Help"
Hell.

If I could somehow prove that packets are being dropped or mis-directed,
maybe I could get thru to a techie that could at least start the ball
rolling on their end to find a solution.

The way Bellsouth DSL support works now is that they blame any issues on
your router or software or PC or any damned thing you tell them you have.
If you say nothing of your router or programs, they try and blame it on
Windows.

Right now, we are getting DSL on one line and the bill comes to that line,
but if you call Bellsouth for service you have to give them the other line's
phone number to get anything done.

Heck.....once we called and asked to have DSL switched from our main line to
our home office line...... BAD BAD decision. they cut off DSL and it took
us 12 weeks and 52 Bellsouth representatives (including the VP of Customer
Relations) to get it back on.

If they weren't a monopoly, I seriously doubt they'd still be in business
today.

I assume you mean 1 GB of RAM.
Some things will not run without a swap file present. I would enable one
even if you don't need it. You can't be so short of disk space that you
can't allow a 100 MB swap file. Personally, I'd recommend just letting
Windows handle it. Most of these tweaks left over from Win95 are kind of
pointless now.
