hi, check under c:\windows\system32 there is either a
msupmgr.exe or updmgr.exe file that will run the microsoft
update.

It is quite possible that you could have some remnants of the virus, or that
it destroyed some files.

First run one or more Free online AV scanners to see if anything shows up
(fix them if you do get any indications of virus):
Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Trend Micro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp (this will require
you to install some software so they can scan your machine for viruses)
Symantec
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/vc_scan.asp? (this also requires that you
install some software to scan your machine)

After you are done dealing with the potential virus issues, I would
recommend doing a Repair Install from the bootable WinXP CD. This should
repair/replace any damaged/missing system files, which should then allow you
to properly install patches, etc.
