Stephanie

I've been out of PCs for a while.
Which one is newer?
Which one is better? for the latest chip?

I want to go out on the mobo to upgrade later on chips.

Thanks
Steph

Socket 939 is newer. I believe that AMD will not be introducing new Socket
940 Athlon64 CPUs.

Socket 940 requires registered memory (one of the buffered forms), which is
both more expensive and slower than regular DDR.

I think that your main real choice would be for the mainboard's chipset.
There are boards with AGP graphics (Via K8T800 Pro, or nVidia nForce3 Ultra)
or PCI Express graphics (Via K8T890 or nVidia nForce4; both may be too new
to be readily available yet).

I've had good luck with an Asus A8V (Via K8T800 Pro), but the nVidia-based
systems are supposed to be faster. I'm using a Newcastle (0.13 micrometer)
3500+ CPU.

Im going to be building a system around the A8V MB this evening and
this will be my first VIA chipset build.

I am curious as to which VIA drivers I should install, the ones from
the drivers section on ASUS site or the VIA_Hyperion 4in1_v455vp1 from
VIA Arena

A friend online told me he didnt even bother to use VIA drivers
because it hosed his system.

I agree with your friend. I never install any VIA drivers unless I
have a real need (ie system doesnt operate correctly).

I do however update the BIOS as a matter of course (but that your
decision)

Well now that ya`ll are now talking chipsets,
Which is the best?
The newest? and is the newest better?
Which is the less fault tolerance? and the best performance?
