Got my discs from dell months ago... Running XP now..
Many folks said wait till at least the first service pack ?
Sure I would love to have some new eye candy and maybe a little wow, but
don't want tons of trouble.
It was a new dell bought in December..
Should I just wait.. and is there a service pack release coming up ?

You can guarantee that a service pack will be coming up but, according to
reports that i've read it won't be for the foreseeable future. You could be
talking months here, maybe even longer.

As to whether you should wait to install or not, well that depends upon you.
I've installed Vista Ultimate on my machine three times since last October
and everything went fine. However, some people, i admit, have had problems.
In the end it all depends upon whether you feel competent to deal with any
problems the installation may bring.

There will not be a service pack for Windows Vista for quite awhile.
After installing Windows Vista, visit the Windows Update to obtain
the latest available updates.

I agree with John. I haven't seen any estimates earlier than 4th quarter,
and probably late.

If you got discs from Dell, it's quite likely that they contain the drivers
and software you need to successfully run Vista on your computer. You might
want to check the Dell web site for updated drivers before loading what you
have.

I personally would not wait. Load it now. Anyone who says "Wait for the
first service pack" is speaking from ignorance.

I would suggest a clean install... not an upgrade. I've installed Vista
Ultimate on these Dell models: Latitude D620, D820, Optiplex GX620, and XPS
Gen 2. (Hmm... thought I'd installed on another desktop, but guess not.)
Anyway, I've not had any driver issues on any of these models. All hw works.
Whether you want to explore Vista before some of the major bugs are worked
out is up to you. But if you do want to give Vista a whirl, I stongly
suggest the clean install route. Upgrades are fraught with problems, imho.

I have been running Vista on two computers since Novembers no
problems.
The newest piece of hardware is a nearly 2 year old video card in the
desktop
The laptop lacks Aero but other than at all work well.
All my software also works as well.

If you have a spare hard drive, install to that and leave your other
drive intact in case there are unforeseen problems.

On the other hand if all works well with Windows XP, perhaps you
should wait.

The current rumor for the release of SP-1 is near the end of the year
coinciding with the release of Longhorn Server rumored to be called
Server 2007.
