Michael

Hi all, looking for help with a weird email problem.

I'm running XP Pro on an Athlon 1.8GHz machine. It's time for a new, bigger
hard disk, 'cause this old one's full.

So I've obtained a nice big new disk, and reinstalled XP and everything I
need, but there is one small problem. My SMTP server doesn't respond when I
try to send mail.

Everything else works fine; POP3, FTP, HTTP, no problem. I can browse the
web till my hair falls out, no worries; I can RECEIVE mail just fine (after
stuffing around for a long, long time with the settings in Outlook) but SMTP
just doesn't wanna work. In ANY email program. I've tried Outlook, Outlook
Express, Incredimail, Pegasus mail; only Outlook (finally) gave me POP3
access, but NONE of 'em will connect to my SMTP server.

I know problems like this are usually the other way round. Usually it's
SMTP that works and POP3 that gives one headaches.

Now I'm back on the old disk and everything's just peachy... So I know
there is no problem with the server itself. (also because a friend has been
happily sending and receiving email and grinning at me the whole time...

I've tried to get help from my ISP, but it was a waste of breath. I called
twice and got the same woman who only knew what words to say but didn't know
what they actually meant. And there was NO way she was letting me talk to
anyone else.

I'm thinking some problem with network protocols and bindings and such, but
admit I don't know as much about it as I could...

Anybody suggest where to look?

Thanks,
:)
Michael

Michael,

A couple of suggestions :
1) Are you connected thru a router at all?If so you may need to change your
MTU settings to 1492...If this is the case Google your router make/model #
and how to change the MTU settings.

2) Are you using Norton's Anti-virus?? If so try going into the options and
making sure you do not have a check on "scan outgoing mail" and if there is
a check there remove it.You really don't need to scan what you are sending
out but you definitely want it scanning the incoming mail.
Of course best way to test if it is working is send yourself an email and
then click send/recieve and if it works Great!

Hope one of these things helps.
Cheers,
Brian

What SMTP server are you running? IIS? Have you tried to telnet in to your
SMTP server? Have you set up the domains so the server knows where to send
the mail?

Hi, and thanks.

Yes, I am using a router, and have printed your instructions to try out when
I reconnect the new disk tonight... Thank you.

Yes, I am using Norton, but disabled it for one trial. Will try the change
you suggest anyway, just in case...

Thank you.

Thank you.

Hmmm... IIS? have no idea.

Haven't tried to telnet in. Will give it a try, at least I may get some
sort of informative error.

Thanks.

Hi all, thanks for your input.

The problem turned out to be Norton Antivirus.

I had thought I had disabled it, but hadn't.
It required me to talk seriously to it with regard to not doing anything at
all - ever.
Once I had done that and restarted, all was fine.

Thanks again.
