I have recently upgraded to bt broadband. I now cannot send emails
through outlook. I can recieve them but not send them. It says that
the smtp server does not recognise my user name or password.
However i can send them with gmail via outlook.

Have exactly the same problem, just hooked up to dsl and using my old
eathlink email server and outlook express receives fine but same
problem as yours when trying to send. Other computer am using Netscape
which works perfectly. Maybe a bright spark might take a fews secs to
give us some assistance.

The username/password must match the credentials expected by the SMTP server
you're using as the mail relay. Are you properly authenticating to the
outgoing server?

Thanks Brian, Incoming and outgoing mail servers are different due to
using DSL and my old email server.

My outgoing (dsl) is "smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com" and my incomming email
server is "pop.earthlink.net".

Under settings "My server requires Authentication" what do we input for
"Outgoing Mail Server" or leave it "Use same settings as my incoming
mail server"?

Since you're using SBC Yahoo! as the SMTP server, you need to use SBC's
credentials there. So, check the "Log on using" radio button and enter your
SBC Yahoo! username/password. Leave the POP credentials your Earthlink
credentials.

As I just explained above....
Reading many passed posts regarding error 530, this problem cant be
fixed so will resort to using Netscape which has worked perfectly for
years, just thought I'd give Outlook Express a chance. Also tried
Mozilla's new Thunderbird which imported all my setting from Netscape
and seems to be very a sucure email program for 2005.

I have spoken to BT who admit there seems to be the problem and they
say they are looking into it. I can send email with my gmail account
through outlook as I said so no problems with outlook. I suspect there
is a problem with smtp port 25 but i don't know.

First, asking Outlook Express questions in an Outlook newsgroup won't get
you the most optimum answers. Second, thousands, if not hundreds of
thousands of people use Outlook (and Outlook Express) successfully with the
same parameters you're trying to use. Since you're the one with the
problem, the chances are you have misconfigured the mail client. If it were
a mail client problem, all those countless other people would have the
problem too. Since they don't, there's only one logical conclusion:
operator error.

Can you believe it. The problem was that BT had not upgraded my payg to
a broadband account which is why i could not use Outlook they siad they
had and maintined that they had for 10 days until some nice person
admitted they hadn't and did something about it. URGH!
