I partitioned and formatted my hard drive, and I was
trying to install windows xp professional from MS-DOS. I
was attempting to load smart drive but it won't load. So
I let the setup hang for a while, as the instructions
from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;307848 said it would. I waited 5 hours but it still
never unhung. If you could email me and tell me what I
can do to get it to load, i'd appreciate it. I didn't
know if it required an operating system for it to load or
not, but if u could just email me like i said and tell me
i'd appreciate it.
thanks...

Smardrv.exe is a L3 cache utility. That executable needs to present on your
startup disk. To start it simply type smartdrv in at the command prompt.

It is not required to install an OS, but I've seen it take up to 12 hours to
for the initial file copy without it.

Your best bet is to boot from the WinXP CD - it is bootable, provided your
PC BIOS is capable - if it is not capable, I would be leery about it
handling WinXP hardware wise.
