Small Network between 2 machines

Hi there,
I want to hear what you clever people suggest ...

I have two XP Pro Machines, both are mine and only I use them; the one a
laptop and the other a PC.

Some time ago I could set up a network between the two without both of
them asking passwords when booting. I had them both with the exact same
name and with installation left out passwords. So none of them asked me
username and password when starting.

I then re-formatted both of them because I couldn't get access to one
another. The only way now for me to get access from the one to the other
and the other way around, is to have different names, added the other as
a user and I have to log in as a user each time the machine boots up.
Previously I could change the sharing of any folder on any machine and
have access to it from the other. The last time, before formatting, I
got the message that I do not have permission to view the folder or
access the computer - or something like that.

(I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say?)

I will really appreciate any help or direction. This entering my name
and password everytime I bootis going to get to me.

Regards,
Deon H

Actually, I *am* having a bit of trouble understanding you, but here's
how to set up your machines: Give each machine a unique computer name;
they cannot be the same. Be sure the machines are on the same network
and subnet, such as 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101 and 255.255.255.0.
Make a user account named the same thing on each of them, let's call it
"Deon". Create shares on each computer for what you want to be able to
access. Be sure the permissions are set up the way you want - "full
control". Connect the computers with either a crossover cable
NIC-to-NIC or regular ethernet to a hub or router or wirelessly with a
wireless router. You can log into each machine as "Deon" and now you'll
be able to share files and printers.

Malke
