Can anyone direct me to a help document that will tell me the easiest way of
setting up one of my computers as a server? If such a document does not
exist can anyone help me? I am using three pcs running xp pro and one mac!

Cheers!

Assuming you don't have a Server, what you need to do is enabling sharing on both PC and Mac. This link may help,

How to enable windows file sharing How to enable the Windows the File Sharing On Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar ... How to enable the Windows File Sharing on Mac OS X 10.3 Panther ...

You've been given information on how to share files, but you didn't tell
us what you want the server to *do*. There are many different roles a
server can play - file server, web server, mail server, and more. If
you want more specific advice, describe your end goal. It would also be
good if you told us whether your Mac is running OSX.

Thankyou Malke!

All I want to do is basically have one computer with large hard drives to
store large files such as video to share over the network. Is it just as
simple as setting up the network and setting the files I want to share over
that network? I posed the question about a server as I had toyed with the
idea of one pc as an "always on" so these files would always be available.
Perhaps I don't trully understand the difference between a real server and a
pc that shares files! I suppose what I realy want to know is, is it worth
connecting to the internet through this one machine (I have a 10mb cable
connection) and leave this one on all the time, and then network all my other
computers through this one? Does this offer any security advantages (ie. can
you filter viruses through it/use IT as a firewall) or will it simply be
easier just to use a filesharing option while leaving the machine with all
the hard drives on permanently (while setting up security software on each
machine) ?

Thanks in aticipation.

NB My mac runs Tiger and will probably be connected to the network via
Airport!

You can easily use one of your computers as a file server. You don't
need a real server operating system to do this with so few machines.
Basically you will set up your lan (as you were told before) and just
make shares on the one computer as desired. It doesn't matter which of
your computers you use, although if you are considering adding more
than a few, use the Mac. The Internet isn't involved in this at all.
You can give the computer sharing the files Internet access or not, as
you wish. It isn't any different than the other machines on the lan.
