I recently reinstalled Windows XP.
Under device manager I have an exclamation mark (!)
beside the following :

! Other Devices
! SM Bus Controller

So what is the "SM Bus Controller" for ?

And what do I need to load in to get it working again ?

Thanks for any help.
Al.

Smart Media Bus Controller... the driver for the built in card reader....
you're probably using a notebook with a card reader slot.

Driver can be found at the notebook manufacturer's website.

Since you don't tell us what notebook you're using, I'm unable to point you
in the exact direction.

I think it's System Management Bus Controller.

I too occasionally found the SM Bus Controller with an Exclamation Mark in
Device Manager - No Drivers Found type of error.
Using the Add Hardware Wizard, Windows offers to download a driver for it
from the internet - but after clicking OK to give it permission it then said
no driver available...

I forgot about it for a while then noticed after a couple of weeks or so
that it had fixed itself and installed a driver.

Now i just opened Device Manager to look at how it had fixed itself - what
driver had been installed - and it's no longer installed.
Add Hardware Wizard now detects it again and once again cannot find a driver
for it....

Sorry, that's wrong. While SM is 'smart media' (as in memory cards) the
SM BUS controller is the System Management Bus controller (on the
motherboard .. as in 'Winbond chip' etc. It handles the motherboard
management functions of temperature, voltage, and fan speed monitoring.

www.google.com "SM Bus controller" for more info than you could possibly
want.

The drivers should, if not built-in to WinXP, be provided as part of the
motherboard driver set.

Brilliant....

I closed Motherboard Monitor and turned off it's start on boot-up and then
re-booted.
SM Bus Controller had disappeared from the Device Manager (i used the Show
Hidden Devices option and searched all device trees) and Add Hardware did
not detect it.
I then ran Motherboard Monitor from it's shortcut (no reboot) and now Add
Hardware shows that i have an SM Bus Controller with it's no driver error.

No problem probably but i'll take sometime tomorrow to look into it in
detail.

Martin.

PS My m/board is an ECS K7S5A Pro.
