Sluggish Response

Almost from day one I've had a problem with Win XP where the system is slow
to respond to 'simple' system functions such as right clicking a file and
selecting "Send To" and then "Mail Recipient". I believe there's usually
disc activity when this happens.

I understand when running a program that there will be a delay. But it gets
very annoying when things you think should be simple take 5 second to
happen.

I'm running Norton Internet Security and uSoft Anti Spyware. And not much
else in the background.
I have 512 Mwg of RAM. Dell Dimension 2400.

Any thoughts ?

Part of the "Lag" is due to the EXCESSIVE logging that Norton Internet
Security software performs. I really don't enjoy doing a Moe Howard
Eye poke at Symantec every time somebody has troubles & uses NIS.
Anyway it could be Context Menu issues or a number of other items.
Part of the slowness, is also Dell's penchant for installing all kinds of
fluff
software, monitors and watchdogs on it's PCs. The PC probably needs
a good "De-Dell-ifying" to get some performance back. You would also
benefit from clearing and disabling all of NIS's logging operations.

I too would recommend something other than NAV as it hogs resources,
AVG would be my personal choice.2 get back that speed,a disk cleanup to
clean out the crap and a disk defrag after that will help. If the files
associated with the programs u run are badly fragmented u might feel
the small delay. Also make sure the system isnt infected, you cud
download spybot and adaware.

Disable both. See how the system works.
 
I will agree with R. I've been using NIS for 3 years. It's a resourse hog and
slow to load as well. I have installed AVE free edition on two of my
computers, to compare with NIS. AVG Free performs as well as NIS. I plan to
BUy AVG to replace NIS as soon as this subscription is finished. If you are
using Nortons System works too, then I will agree again with R.

You do understand that AVG is Antivirus ONLY, right?

NIS is a firewall and AV product bundled in one package, something that
AVG is not.

I also use AVG on residential systems and I've only seen it miss a
couple things that Norton/Symantec found, so, for a free product it's
not too bad.
