Slow workgroup file sharing refresh on XP machines

I have an XP Home Edition SP2 laptop that I am trying to have it access
shared folders on my home workgroup PC, which is running XP Pro SP2, and for
the last week, performance between the two machines in refreshing shared
folders and resources in Explorer windows has been DISMAL!

If the folder I am trying to access has 1 folder and/or file, then it's not
that bad. But the moment I try to view a shared folder with MULTIPLE
sub-folders and/or files, the Explorer window will freeze for up to 5 minutes
before a refresh will take place, thereby making my home file shares
inacessible!

Can someone PLEASE help me out here! I do not enough time to sift thru
diagnostics myself, and am in desperate need to have this resolved!
